"Scribbly-Gum"

The cold spring falls from the stone.
I passed and heard
the mountain, palm and fern
spoken in one strange word.
The gum-tree stands by the spring.
I peeled its splitting bark
and found the written track
of a life I could not read.

March 30th to April 1st, 2007

The Two Fires Festival is a celebration of poet and activist Judith Wright's impressive double legacy, and an opportunity to explore the ongoing relevance of that legacy in today's world. The festival stokes the 'two fires' of arts and activism. This year's theme is:

Identity and Environment: taking up the challenge

Judith Wright is probably best remembered as one of the finest poets Australia has produced. She was also a great pioneer and leader in the fields of environmental conservation and land rights and human rights for Indigenous Australians.

The 2007 Two Fires Festival will feature:

Indigenous art exhibition, cross-cultural dialogues, panel discussion, films, cultural events and concert performances.

Readings and discussions by poets and writers - Bronwyn Lea, Sam Wagan Watson, Roger McDonald, Louise Crisp, Kim Mahood, Jackie French, Martin Langford and others.

Community Concert on Friday night featuring The Cantors, Richard Steele and Madrigala.

Convener Suzanne Bellamy has invited Professors Elizabeth Webby and Dianne Bell to host two discussion sessions entitled Women, Writers and Ideas. These sessions will be held in conjunction with a quilt exhibition titled Women's Words and Stitches.

Ted Trainor speaks on Energy and the Future.

Dialogue on Identity and Environment - and academic forum in two sessions convened by the Globalism Institute, RMIT (places for this are limited). Speakers include Don Henry (ACF), Libby Robin, Val Plumwood, Kate Rigby, Aidan Davison and Peter Hay.

Walks at "Edge", Judith Wright's home for 20 years, with readings of her poems written in and for that landscape.

Saturday night Festival Concert featuring Dave Steel, Johnny Huckle and others.

Exhibitions, book displays and launches, a poet's breakfast, song-writing workshops, community singing session, poetry activities, performances. Other events in planning
